Program Description
The Interdisciplinary Studies BA prepares students to be thoughtful, well-educated individuals with understanding of and an appreciation for multiple ways of seeing the world, and are skilled at using interdisciplinary approaches to meet the challenges facing themselves, their communities, and the world.
Building on Ramapo College’s tradition of interdisciplinary inquiry, this major encourages and inspires reflection, critical thinking, emotional maturity, and the broadening of the mind through the contemplation of new possibilities. This major encourages students to make connections across a variety of subject areas.
An Interdisciplinary Studies graduate shall:
Build foundational knowledge across the selected areas of study;
Apply knowledge to provide answers to real-life, interdisciplinary problems using appropriate tools and methodologies; and
Be prepared for a variety of careers trajectories and/or graduate study.
Students majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies are encouraged to double major and/or minor to increase their career options and opportunities.
Learning Goals and Outcomes
Goal 1: Students will create a self-designed major that follows Interdisciplinary Studies major requirements.
Outcome 1: Students will create a learning contract and explain their self-designed major including a rationale for it.
Goal 2: Research and Interdisciplinary
Outcome 1: Students will identify and apply research methods to their field(s) of study
Outcome 2: Students will use interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to address a problem (or question).
Goal 3: Career Preparedness
Outcome 1: Students will articulate how their academic interdisciplinary studies major advances their career development or continued education.
Goal 4: Students will communicate effectively.
Outcome 1: Written communication: Write effectively in scholarly and creative contexts.
Outcome 2: Oral communication: Students will make effective presentations in scholarly or creative contexts in language appropriate for the subject and audience.
