Program Description

The Natural Sciences major is a flexible major designed to give students a broad understanding of the natural sciences and their role in social, political and economic contexts.

Students gain a broad foundation in the sciences, with lab coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and earth & environmental sciences; the mathematics component provides students with the quantitative skills necessary for their chosen specialization. In the second half of the program, students select a five-course concentration in one of the science areas (life sciences or physical sciences), a social science area (policy, business), or communication. The program culminates with a science-communication capstone course tying the student’s concentration back to the foundational sequence.

Students also undertake a high-impact experiential learning activity; options include includes field seminars, multi-disciplinary "journal club", internships, co-ops, or research projects (for example, by independent study or through the School of Science, Nursing, and Health (SNH) Research Honors Program).

This major is ideal for transfer and returning students, and prospective middle/high school science teachers. We also cater to science students who prefer to receive a broad scientific training in diverse disciplines rather than the depth of a single, narrower discipline. It is also an option for students intending to apply to medical schools. The program maintains close ties with both the Teacher Education and Degree Completion Programs, and the pre-med advisor.

Students who complete the major will be competently prepared to pursue further academic work in graduate and professional schools in science, medicine/health, business, and other areas, as well as to begin careers in their chosen fields.
