The minor provides students with a firm grounding in physical and historical geology. Students will gain experience in geological cartographic techniques, be able to identify the major minerals and rocks (in the laboratory and the field), and gain practice in geological field techniques. The electives provide an opportunity to explore a wide range of aspects of earth science. Research opportunities in geology and paleontology are available.

In addition to students using the Earth Science minor for middle school science or high school earth science certification, the Earth Science minor can also be used to access employment opportunities in the environmental and geological consulting sector, which is thriving in New Jersey, by providing geological skills beyond those acquired within the Environmental Science & Environmental Studies majors, as well as opening doors to studying the geosciences in graduate school.
