SOCIAL WORK THEORY AND PRACTICE I

Social Work (SWRK) Social Science & Human Srv

Course Description

Theory and Practice of Social Work I is the first in a sequence of two social work theory, practice, and practicum instruction courses in the BSW Program. Theory and Practice I & II are part of the professional foundation year. With skills of engagement at the core, the course involves students in interviewing, assessing, goal-setting, contracting, and implementing intervention strategies with diverse client populations and systems of all sizes including individuals, couples, families, agencies, and communities. The practicum component facilitates the development of the student in the profession by engaging the signature pedagogy of hands-on-learning. Through the resources of the Practicum Education Department, students will be placed in an agency for 200 hours of supervised practice. Students are expected to utilize critical thinking to link social work theories with appropriate practice skills, to critically evaluate their work in class and practicum, and to utilize research-informed practice to understand how agencies provide services.
