AFRICAN AMERICANS IN FILM
Course Description
The course will examine the images of African Americans portrayed in popular film from 1915 to the present. Films viewed will contrast those produced by major Hollywood studios and independent directors such as Oscar Micheaux, Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, and Spike Lee. Particular attention will focus on each film's relationship to the historical time period and cultural milieu in which it was produced. Readings will include film criticism, interviews with film directors, and historical and sociological monographs.
