This course is a study of the evolution, powers, and limitations of the presidency. Emphasis will be placed on presidential power, the selection process, presidential interaction with other institutions and the public, and evaluating presidents. The course will include an analysis of the president's roles as Commander-in-Chief, foreign policymaker, "chief legislator," chief executive, and party leader. The course reflects the interdisciplinary nature of presidential studies including scholarship from political science, psychology, law, political communication, and history. Throughout the course, we will apply course material to current political events.
