CIVIL RIGHTS

Political Science (POLI)Arts, Humanities and Education

Course Description

This course will acquaint students with modern civil rights movements in America from three different perspectives—normative, empirical, and doctrinal development of Supreme Court cases. It will also address voting and representation as civil rights issues. The course is organized around two central questions—what are the major developments in civil rights and to what extent can the US Supreme Court drive social change? To address these questions, we will examine relevant Court cases, the actions of other political actors (e.g. President, Congress, state and local officials, and interest groups), and assess the impact of Court cases on the development of civil rights.
