Course Description

The DJ has emerged as a cultural power broker and a new type of musician, a prototype for all forms of creativity in the 215’ century. This course will explore the history of DJs and their roles in commercial and pirate radio, disco, hip~hop, house, techno, drum and bass, dubstep/grime, EDM, and beyond. The contextual relationship of DJs to their local scenes as well as to other
forms of creative expression will be a focus of the course. Students will explore the international and intercultural aspects of a variety of musical movements centered around the DJ. The DJ’s role in redefining notions of intellectual property and authorship will also be a key topic of research and discussion. The practical techniques of DJing will be investigated through a series of in class projects and the use of computer based DJ systems. Students will
learn to perform as DJs and will have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a final presentation.
