An introduction to the language and practices of music making. The development of aural skills is central to the course, as are the basic understandings of musical fundamentals: timbre and sound, instrumentation, rhythm, pitch, modes, melody, harmony, texture, musical structures, and basic notation. Developing aural skills is essential for understanding music and its theory, as well as for discovering new ways of listening. Diverse musical styles are studied, with particular attention paid to “popular” styles.
