MUSICIANSHIP I
Course Description
The purpose of Ramapo’s Musicianship course sequence is to give students tools to understand
the construction of music and create music from a more knowledgeable and comprehensive
approach. Musicianship I focuses on diatonic harmony (keys, chords, diatonic chord
progressions, and Roman Numeral Analysis) and its relationships with melody, rhythm,
sound/timbre, arrangement, lyrics, and form. Comprehension will be gained through examination
of representative music from the classical and popular canons as well as through ear training,
composition/songwriting, and keyboard performance. Fluency in reading treble clef, bass clef,
and basic rhythms is required for taking this course. All students must first take the Musicianship
Placement Test in order to determine if they should start their Musicianship sequence with Music
Fundamentals, Musicianship I, or Musicianship II.
