Social Welfare Policies in Health and Mental Health is an advanced policy course that focuses on a selected social welfare issues that apply it to a specialized issue. It will teach students the analytic skills needed to critically synthesize and interpret the complexities of social welfare policy. The course explores policy dynamics, pattems, and changes through a closer look at history, theories, frameworks, ethical issues, forces of oppression and the paths to social, economic, and political justice relevant to health and mental health policy. The focus on health and mental health includes the recognition of the needs of diverse groups within this group,
policies that impact this population and health disparities that result from the issues. Students will develop expertise about particular clients, communities, social agencies, and govemment programs impacting health and mental health policies in the United States and globally. Students will learn that social welfare principles applicable to one group can be generalized to other populations and policies.
