CLIN PRACT WITH LGBTQAI+ CMTY
Course Description
Social Work with the LGBTQI+ Community is an elective course in the MSW program. This course provides foundation knowledge and prepares students for culturally competent practice with people who identify as part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+ (LGBTQ+) communities. The first part of the course explores the historical experience of LGBTQ+ people from both a sociopolitical and policy perspective. The remaining section of the course focuses on current practice considerations impacting individuals and families. This includes concepts related to the development of LGBTQ+ identity, the coming-out process, gender expression, intersectionality, health, mental health, substance use, and familial issues. Practice techniques, clinical interventions, ethical considerations, legal issues, and resources for support and information will be explored. Class will consist of lecture and student discussion with guest speakers used as appropriate to enhance learning.
