CLINICAL PRACTICE IN SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK
Course Description
This course offers an introduction to social work practice in the educational setting. This course will offer the critical skills needed to develop and analyze effective interventions for students at risk of low academic achievement and students with physical, mental, and behavior health concerns. The topical areas to be discussed are: the history and roles of social workers in the school settings; theories and frameworks used to guide effective assessment and treatment planning for students who are in need of supportive services; overview of the structures and policies of educational institutions at the federal and state level that influence academic achievement at the grade school level; issues surrounding the right to a quality education for oppressed and marginalized groups; and current critical issues within the school environment, to include racism and discrimination, the school-to-prison pipeline, bullying, homophobia, and family and community engagement.
