FOUNDATIONS I - ITALIAN

Language (LANG) Humanities and Global Studies

Course Description

This course is designed to foster creativity and encourage the use of Italian in meaningful, everyday situations while promoting cultural awareness and appreciation. The course is based on ACTFL oral proficiency guidelines with a functional methodology, allowing for the immediate integration of newly learned vocabulary into real-life role-playing. Its primary goal is to emphasize the use of language rather than an abstract knowledge of it. A reality based communication approach will provide the students with the skills to express themselves, both in
speech and in writing, at the novice/low/id-level and will prepare the students with a panorama of Italian culture, from its classical roots to its most contemporary expressions. ln class, listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities will be used to enhance the grasp of vocabulary and to provide opportunities to express ideas in Italian. Students will be constantly encouraged to focus on the goal of reaching communicative competence while striving toward grammatical accuracy.
The text is supported by audio and online material (provided by the instructor via Moodle). Students will be able to carry out activities, do and check their homework, and study and receive some of the lessons through a computer.
