THE HOLOCAUST

History (HIST) Humanities and Global Studies

Course Description

This course explores in nuanced detail the history of the Holocaust, the murder of some six-million people identified as Jews during the Second World War. We situate the Holocaust in a number of contexts, including the history of racism and antisemitism, the politics of colonialism and nationalism, and global warfare. Other topics include collaboration and resistance, the concentration-camp system, multiple victim groups and other genocides entwined with the Holocaust, and postwar justice. Our approach will highlight differences in experiences based upon gender, race, and class. Through the course, students will wrestle with ongoing and contemporary debates regarding the Holocaust, genocide, antisemitism, and racism. Individual stories piece and challenge master narratives to help students understand the Holocaust as a civilizational and personal event. The class includes a final research project, which may be a traditional paper but can also take other creative forms.
