HISTORY AND GAME DESIGN
Course Description
This course functions primarily as a workshop. It introduces students to the theory and practice of historical game design. Students will learn to differentiate between games and simulations. They will become familiar with the scholarship surrounding both and their application in commercial, professional, and educational settings. The goal of the course is for each student to create a complete and playable game dealing with an historical topic. The students will research their topics and work on aspects of their games throughout the semester, culminating in a mini "convention" at which all games are demonstrated and played.
This is NOT a course about software design. The games in question must be playable face-to-face using traditional components like tokens, dice, cards, and other physical objects that the students may design, themselves.
