METHODS OF TEACHING ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS
Course Description
This course is designed for students who plan on teaching at the elementary school level.
Emphasis will be placed on the development of research based instructional strategies for
mathematics with a focus on the learner. Preparation, planning, classroom environment,
instruction and professional responsibilities will be addressed. Some of the key components of
the course are: i.) Cognitively guided mathematics instruction; ii.) Assessment of, and
remediation for, difficulties in mathematics; iii.) The use of mathematical practices in instruction;
iv.) The integration of literacy skills in mathematics.
