LITERACY THEORY & PRACTICE
Course Description
This course is one in a series of professional education courses leading to elementary
education certification. It is designed to provide students with current reading theory and
practices followed in American schools. The course focuses on developing the pedagogical
content knowledge and conceptual framework for teaching early literacy skills and foundational
reading skills, including, but not limited to, phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading
comprehension, fluency, and concepts of print. In addition, students will have the opportunity to
learn about the application of coursework to literacy instruction through required field placement.
The course requires 20 hours of clinical experience fieldwork outside of the classroom.
