METHODS IN THE CONTENT AREAS: K-12 PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH
Course Description
Methods in Content Areas: K-12 Physical Education/Health builds on EDUC 222 Teaching: Principles and Practices, and is designed to allow for extended in-depth focus on the practice of effective teaching of physical education and health at the K-12 level. It also includes an extended NJ Department of Education mandated fieldwork component (Clinical Practice I), which provides the opportunity to engage in a variety of extended authentic internship experiences at a New Jersey public school. Specifically, this course includes the study of curricular organization, formulation of instructional goals, selection and sequencing of content, design of instructional activities, and appraisal of student learning in both physical education and health content areas. Topics include unit and lesson planning in the Understanding by Design standard, classroom management, learning strategies, and the design of learning activities. Candidates will be required to complete a NJ state-mandated minimum of 170 fieldwork hours (Clinical Practice I) in a p-12 setting. Given the overall nature and purpose of this learning experience, this course is uniquely interactive and, therefore, requires your participation in all clinical practice fieldwork activities (2 days/week), weekly in-person seminar sessions, online threaded discussions, and related course experiences. Permission of the Teacher Education Department is required to enroll in this course.
