COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION

Educational Technology (EDTC) Social Science Graduate

Course Description

Students will examine the nature of the communities they live and work in including: the role of key institutions, such as schools; the impact of the ecological surrounds on community life; and the transformations of the surrounds by the community over time. Students will focus on: the evolution of land use; history of the community; current status of the community with respect to sustainability indicators such as health, well being and peace of mind; and decision-making processes that change the nature of the community. Students will explore data bases that can be used to inform citizens about the state of their community and appreciate the potential for participatory approaches. Work will culminate in a web site, presentation, and development of a strategy for schools and civic organizations to promote public understanding and move the community in more sustainable directions.
