INTERMEDIATE CERAMICS
Course Description
Building from the basic level course, Intermediate Ceramics develops a more in-depth knowledge base of clay and the ceramic processes as an artistic medium. The course focuses on more advanced-level construction methods utilizing hand-building and wheel-throwing processes. Projects exploring sculptural and utilitarian forms will push students to develop their technical proficiency alongside conceptual reasoning and creative problem-solving. In addition to the hands-on manipulation of clay, the course will challenge students to contextualize the medium within modern and historical cultures around the globe through research and writing assignments. Introducing students to glaze chemistry, kiln building and clay body formulation, the course will also cover the more scientific aspects of the material. Ceramics is a process-heavy discipline; in addition to the lab fee for this course, students will be expected to individually purchase materials for their projects at off-campus locations.
