FOUNDATIONS-ARABIC II

Language (LANG) Humanities and Global Studies

Course Description

This course is a continuation of Foundations I. The course is designed to foster creativity and encourage the use of Arabic in meaningful, everyday situations while promoting cultural awareness and appreciation. It is based on ACTFL oral proficiency guidelines with a functional methodology, allowing for the immediate integration of newly learned vocabulary into real-life role playing. The primary goal of the course is to emphasize the use of language rather than the abstract knowledge of it. A reality-based communication approach will provide the students with the skills necessary to express themselves, both in speech and writing, at the novice/high level and will prepare the students with a panorama of Arabic culture, from its classical roots to its most contemporary expressions. In class, listening, speaking, reading and writing activities will be used to enhance the grasp of vocabulary and to provide opportunities to express ideas in Arabic. Students will be encouraged to focus on the goal of reaching communicative competence while striving toward grammatical accuracy.
