This course is a study of the historical development of major ideas about freedom, equality, political participation, the relation between individuals and society, and relations between women and men. We will make a comprehensive survey of what core thinkers have had to say about human nature and our social arrangements, and their resulting systems of justice, liberty, equality, and the distribution of social goods. Our intent is to read these classical and contemporary theories to recognize the resonance of the issues raised, so many years ago, as key to understanding ongoing conundrums and complexities in the world today.
