SIGNAL PROCESSING AND INTERACTIVE MUSIC

Music (MUSI) Graduate Arts

Course Description

In this class students will use an under-the-hood approach to learn principles and applications of digital signal processing in the context of developing an interactive performance instrument in the Max/MSP graphical programming environment. Topics will include advanced sample manipulation, granular synthesis, phase vocoding, and filter design. Additionally, the course will cover program architecture, managing data from sensors and other controllers, and the use of algorithmic control techniques. Students will be expected to build a performance tool in Max/MSP with the techniques they have learned in class, and present their pieces with a brief performance and explanation at the end of the term.
