This course will explore the meaning of mythology by examining a great variety of myths drawn from many different cultures. Although it will focus on three broad types of myth--cosmological, fertility and hero narratives--it will highlight the socio-historical circumstances that give each myth its particular meaning, as well as those aspects of the human condition that provide a common ground for this intricate web of meaning.
