This course focuses on human-nature relationship and the law from a comparative lens. The course will provide students an overview of the philosophical debates, ethics, and social movement politics that are foundational to the development of environmental law in different legal systems including common law and civil law systems, indigenous legal traditions and international law. Students will also examine critical approaches to the study of environmental law in the Global North and Global South.

Students will work with world views and laws that govern the protection of the environment and analyze how different legal traditions respond to issues of environmental harm, protection, and social justice. The course is appropriate for those with a general interest in law, as well as for those concerned with environmental problems.
