LAW AND NARRATIVE

Law and Society (LAWS) Social Science & Human Srv

Course Description

This course is an upper level elective within the Law and Society category of Culture and the Humanities. The course focuses upon Law and Narrative in three ways: (1) narratives about law; (2) narratives in law; and (3) law as narrative. First, narratives about law can be informative about how individuals or populations view or understand law – law’s place in their lives, how law operates, whether or not it is just, etc. These can be fictional or non-fictional narratives about law. Second, narratives in law can provide definition and humanity to abstract general rules. Third, law as narrative concerns the construction of legal reality within which all humans conduct their lives.
