CONTEMPORARY LATIN AMERICA

International Studies (INTL) Humanities and Global Studies

Course Description

Latin America is a geographic area that shares many commonalities yet it is wonderfully diverse. This course will explore the social commonalities and the cultural particularities of this region from an interdisciplinary perspective. It will trace the historical roots of the different traditions and ways of life on the continent. In addition, the course will cover political, economic, and
social processes found in Latin America, such as development, migration, urbanization, and democratization. Last, it will examine some specific issues in the region such as race, religion, gender, and the arts. While the course will provide an overview to most of the countries in Latin America, it will also focus on a few in more detail.
