This course explores the origins, history, beliefs, and practices of the Nazi part, its rise to power and its twelve-year regime. Students will learn to separate fact from mythology by becoming familiar with the historiography of Nazism, and with the differences between popular and scholarly depictions of the party and its members. The course will explore several moral and ethical issues as they relate to Nazi politics and rule, such as: notions of collective responsibility, concepts of national and racial identity, the role of violence in politics, the utility of common words like "evil" or "atrocity" when describing actions that are legal and in keeping with the practices of one's government, and many others.
