Course Description

A study of the political, social, and cultural history of the United States from the ratification of the Constitution to the end of the Mexican-American War. Topics covered include rise of political partisanship, war and territorial expansion, slavery and anti-slavery activism, early industrial development, and movements for social reform. As we examine the period's major developments we will read recent scholarship, learn how to locate and interpret relevant primary sources, and develop our historiographical understanding.
