CLINCAL CAPSTONE I: ELEMENTARY/CONTENT AREA

Education (EDUC)Arts, Humanities and Education

Course Description

This course serves as the first of two clinical capstone seminar courses for teacher education. Students are required to work within their clinical internship placements and fulfill the responsibilities and obligations outlined in the Clinical Intern Orientation Resources provided by Ramapo College Teacher Education Department. In addition, this course is designed to provide you with greater in-depth focus on the practice of effective teaching. It also includes an extended fieldwork component, which will give you the opportunity to engage in a variety of extended authentic experiences at a New Jersey public school.

Students are expected to serve in teaching and leadership roles in their classroom(s) under the supervision of their official Clinical Supervisor and experienced Cooperating Teacher. Students will have the opportunity to apply knowledge, skills and dispositions from core education coursework, with a focus on: setting instructional goals, selection and sequencing of content, design of instructional activities, appraisal of student learning, differentiated instructional practices, multiple learning environments, professional collaboration, school policies and procedures, and reflective practice. Topics include teaching and learning theory, the learning environment, knowing your students, unit and lesson planning, lesson delivery, classroom management, learning strategies, assessment, the design of learning activities, and how to make learning engaging and fun. Candidates steadily increase classroom responsibilities and demonstrate competency in daily and long-term planning, instruction, assessment, behavior management, and other professional tasks, culminating in their assuming full responsibility for students in a classroom setting, the following semester. Candidates are expected to exhibit professionalism throughout all components of the experience.

This course is designed to support your classroom work and to assist you in the process of lesson planning and delivery as well as the process of observation and feedback. Although this course is focused on quality instruction, objectives and course understandings, it will also focus on the three lessons that you will deliver, the observations of those lessons, and the use of observer feedback to improve instruction. It will also provide opportunities to learn about teacher evaluation programs in the State of NJ. Course fee required.
